Bentonite clay is formed from volcanic ash. It gets its name from Fort Benton, Wyoming, where it is found in large amounts. The powder is known to absorb toxins from the skin and is an excellent choice for a poultice.

D.I.Y. for Poultice Use

Poison Ivy, Poison Oak, or Poison Sumac
The urushiol oil that poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac plants produce begin binding to the proteins in the skin which causes the intense itching rash. To neutralize this reaction, apply a poultice of bentonite clay mixed with infused oil of plantain (plantago major) or jewelweed (Impatiens capensis). Using a tongue depressor or craft stick, blend infused oil with bentonite clay using approximately 2 parts clay and 1 part herbal infused oil. Leave the poultice on to dry for about 2 hours before washing it off. Reapply within another 3 hours if needed.

Bee and Wasp Stings
To stop swelling and intense pain, you will need to act immediately after the sting occurs. This means you will need to have your herbal medicine cabinet stocked with infused oil of plantain (plantago major) and bentonite clay powder, along with a small dosing cup and blending spoon or stick. Make a quick 2:1 blend of clay and infused plantain oil. Apply with your fingers to the sting and let it dry. When the stinging and swelling has subsided, wash off the dried poultice.
